President Emeritus, Chairman Emeritus of the Board
Spiros Zodhiates was born of Greek parents on the island of Cyprus. After completing his Greek education, he attended the American University in Cairo, Egypt, received his Th.B. degree from the National Bible Institute (now Shelton College) in New York, and his M.A. from New York University. In 1978 he earned his Doctor of Theology degree from Luther Rice Seminary of Jacksonville, Florida. He is also the recipient of several honorary doctorates.
In 1946, he came to the United States at the invitation of AMG International, of which he became president in 1966. AMG was founded in 1943 as a ministry only to the Greeks and Greece. It was first located in New York City and then in Ridgefield, New Jersey. In 1978, AMG moved to its present location in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
It was in 1951 that Dr. Zodhiates’ passion for radio was born. Using his Greek background and knowledge of the Greek language as a springboard, Dr. Zodhiates took to the airwaves, teaching New Testament truths in light of the original Greek meaning of the words used. Dr. Zodhiates’ program, New Testament Light, which began on one station in rural Pennsylvania was heard for over 50 years on stations throughout the United States and Canada. Dr. Zodhiates’ teaching from the Greek New Testament uniquely complemented the presentation of ministry needs and provided a legacy of thoughtful insights for those interested in a better understanding of the Word of God. New Testament Light is now heard worldwide as a weekly internet broadcast on AMG's Pulpit Helps magazine website.
It is under Dr. Zodhiates’ leadership that AMG grew from a small ministry focusing on the land of Greece to a worldwide evangelistic and relief ministry in over 40 countries. AMG ministers to orphans and leprosy patients, and has an expanding evangelistic thrust of “Advertising the Message of the Gospel” through paid newspaper and magazine gospel messages in many lands and languages.
Dr. Zodhiates is a recognized authority on the Greek New Testament. He writes a weekly gospel message which appears as a paid advertisement in Greek newspapers and magazines around the world, and is editor-in-chief of the leading 54-page Greek evangelical magazine, The Voice of the Gospel, published in Athens, Greece. He is the author of 207 books and booklets in English, as well as 82 books and booklets in Greek. He is also the founder of Pulpit Helps magazine, a monthly periodical received by ministers, church workers, and Bible teachers in the USA. It is also published in Indonesia, India, and Mexico.
Dr. Zodhiates’ greatest contribution to Bible students everywhere is the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible , which takes the reader to the source of the Hebrew and Greek words and grammar. In addition, there are extensive exegetical footnotes explaining the most difficult passages of the Old and New Testaments.
He is responsible for introducing the Modern Greek pronunciation of Classical and Koine Greek into U.S. colleges and universities through A Guide to Modern Greek Pronunciation and his recordings of the entire Koine New Testament (Nestle's text) in Modern Greek pronunciation.
He has recorded with Modern Greek pronunciation special courses on New Testament Greek for those who wish to learn it on their own or in classrooms, using texts such as Machen's New Testament Greek for Beginners, Summers', Davis', and Hadjiantoniou's grammars. Also, on a single cassette, he has first recorded with Modern Greek pronunciation the most frequently used Greek Testament in Greek with its English equivalent.
For over sixty years, Dr. Spiros Zodhiates has served the Lord with great enthusiasm and resolve. Through his prayer and effort, multitudes of children have been cared for, many hundreds of national workers have been trained and sponsored in the Gospel ministry, and countless new believers have been introduced to the Good News of Jesus Christ.
In August 2005, at the age of 83, Dr. Zodhiates was elevated to the position of Chairman Emeritus of AMG's Board of Trustees and President Emeritus of AMG International. He continues to study and write, and his burden to reach the millions of people who are not saved remains undiminished.
