General Ministries: Greek Friday
January 20th, 2012

Hear from our co-worker, Fotis Romeos, about the crisis in Greece.  Please continue to keep this country in your prayers.

Greece prepares to endure a fifth consecutive year of recession, as the crisis extends its reach, as cuts take their toll, as poverty deepens and unemployment climbs, evidence is mounting that society is learning hard lessons.

Everyday we face tragic titles in the newspapers and electronic media like the following:

“Dimitris Gasparinatos had asked Greek authorities to take four of his 10 children into care because he could not afford to feed them.”

“Deep in debt, the couple owed money to the butcher, baker and grocer – the very people who had kept them going in the port of Patras, west of Athens. In their tiny flat, the family slipped increasingly into a life of squalor.”

“They have closed down more than 50 beds in Intensive Care Units  in Greek state hospitals the recent weeks due to firing of medical personnel”

“The unemployment in the ages 18 to 28 years old is more than 45%!!!”

“Thousands of business have closed down the recent months all over Greece!!!”

“The bankruptcy of the Greece is coming closer every month”

In the midst of this environment  the believers of Christ are bringing the message of hope serving the physical and spiritual needs of people. It seems to be an endless effort as the needs become bigger and we become more tired.... So we deeply appreciate your prayers.

  • Pray as we continue all the projects of AMG in Greece. New plans are made for the launch of website TV with 24 hours of program in order to serve the spiritual needs of people during those difficult times providing practical advices and providing an alternative of the negative media presentations.
  • Praise the Lord that St. Luke’s hospital closed 2011 well and in much better shape than other private facilities. We need prayers as the future and the overall environment  is still very challenging.
  • Pray for the final negotiations for the “haircut” of Greek dept. The final decision is expected the following days.  The challenging factor is the interest rate of the new gigantic international loan which will be provided to Greece.
  • Pray for the preparations of the spring semester at Spiros Zodhiates New Testament Center at CVC with a class of 9 students.
  • Pray for our new publications and especially for the Voice of the Gospel our monthly magazine which serves thousand of Greek families all over the world. The postage rate is still a very challenging factor

We know that our Lord is in full control of the whole world included Greece so we keep pressing on having His victory.

Till next time,

Fotis Romeos
